Ok, so this is off topic Steve, but since you were a bartender;
How does one make the perfect dirty martini?
I love em, but don't know how to make them as well as i can get them at some of the finer establishments. I like Bombay sapphire, but i never get the mix right, or does it have something to do with how much ice and how long to shake?

I should admit that I don't drink other than an occasional beer or wine, but I have had people rave about my skills as mixologist, even though I have no clue how these things taste.
You're on the right track with a quality gin.
The Gospel of Steve:
Brethren, here are your Dirty Martini ingredients-
Bombay Sapphire
Olive juice (from olive jar containing the olives)
Mix 3 parts gin with 1 part olive juice. Shake well (as if you were smiting someone) with ice(no sacred quantity) for 3 seconds and strain into martini glass, throw in 2-3 olives.
You might want to experiment with 4 parts gin with 1 part olive juice to see if that's more to your liking.
That's all you need to do, no vermouth, btw.
There is such thing as a "Perfect Martini" which is made with a dash of dry and a dash of sweet vermouth.
The correct way to make a dry martini is to add
only
a drop of dry vermouth to the gin or vodka.
Peace be with you, and don't drink and drive.

Wait! Tarry, and speakest thou verily: hast thou a book of holy writ? Trader Vic's Bartenders Guide?

LOL,
I only refered to the holy book when I was lost in the wilderness, and when Beth, my drink guru/godess, wasn't at my side. Never let the customer see you open a book!

Verily, thy scriptures were kept behind thine altar. Let not the unclean eye behold Trader Vic's lest it prove a curse unto thy tips.

But 'keep trying' usually helps. They taste better and better until you reach critical mass and the room starts spinning.

We're leaving for China tomorrow to go adopt our daughter.
I might try to check in here or there, assuming I can access this site while in China.
Everyone, Be Nice to each other till I get back, LOL!

I'll pray that everything goes as planned. Be safe and see you when you return.
