This still doesn't explain the incoherence though Smiley

It's just some more desperate spinning.

"Peter and Thomas obviously utter the words, “Where are you going?’ with a decidedly different drift. As has been well said, Peter’s question was only a selfish exclamation, which would not hear of Jesus’ going away alone. The assertion of Thomas was nothing but an expression of discouragement and dullness of mind."

That's not in the text though. Apologetic Christians simply invent these things to uphold the illusion of coherence.

I've never read Ehrman's books, so I am unfamiliar with his argument, nor have I read Hank Hannigraf, and not having the chance to look at the context of the three John passages, I would have to say that if Hannigraf is involved in any kind of "desperate spinning" (and again, I do not know), he would probabably be guilty of the same kind of literary analysis that the New Critics did they analyzed a literary text in such a way that it could be viewed as an harmonious and unified whole, which was one of the major disagreements between the New Critics and the Post-Stucturalists, particularly the Deconstructionists, who focused on, among other things, binary oppositions. The interpretation of text largely depends on one's subjectivity and which literary theory one subscribes to (or at least uses).

As an intro you could real Ehrman's latest book "Jesus, interrupted". Although you probably already know a lot of the stuff in it.

I can but recommend his books though. They're fascinating reads. And always backed up.

If your posting is an example of "always backed up" - you need to back up and read its context.

    The context is clear.

Peter and Thomas both asked Jesus where he was going. Despite Jesus' claim to the contrary later. It's black on white in your Bible.

Well, at least it seems so:

John 13:36 Simon Peter asked him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus replied, "Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later."

John 14:5 Thomas said to him, "Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know the way?"

John 16:5 "Now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?'"

Any explanation as to Jesus' apparent short attention span here?

Jesus didn't have a short attention span, he was a condescending, sarcastic, dirtball of a friend. There's no need to treat people, never mind friends, in this manner over simple questions. This is a side of Jesus that I didn't know about. I think I love this Jesus character, but if I were an Apostle, I don't think my words and gestures in response would survive in print. The moderators of the New Testament would have developed carpal tunnel and nervous twitching eye syndromes dealing with the Gospel of Stevie, much like the moderators here.  Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

On the other hand Jesus promised them to become kings and get nice and shiny thrones ... I guess that made them quite tolerant with his erratic behaviour Wink
