Driving herds of bison off of a cliff in order to feed a village can hardly be compared to recreational shooting of animals under the guise of "well they are pests".  Nor is the comparison to killing plague infested rodents.  Both of these are very reasonable things to do.

The recreational shooting or shooting for fun, it just demonstrates a certain disregard for life and the environment in general.

    I don't like it.

I don't like it either. But most species that are regarded like that are quite plentiful.

Humans are quite plentiful too but when people come into my care with my students I don't say, "we don't have to be concerned of safety issues, a few sacrificial plentiful humans......"   Shocked

Plenty is not a reason to exempt basic laws of ethics with regards to life issues.

Hi Wisc, how are you? I found this thread and I am enjoying the polite disucssion. The Corner is really good about this isn't it?

Mouse has made some very good points. Especially about the coyotes. They do have a particular territory and range across it. They do a good job of keeping the rodent population down.  When coyotes are overhunted, and in my area they have been, then you start fiding disease and starvation amongst thos epopulations. On my farm we do have a small pack that ranges across our area. They are hunted and we have had some problems with the rabbit population. They are sickening. That, for a hunter such as the ones in my family, is an issue.

As to the two hunters you mentioned in your first post I can only wonder in what state this is common practice. I am referring to shooting turkeys just to control them as 'pests'. In the area where I live the turkey populaqtion is strictly controlled. There are particualr season where trukeys cab be taken. To hunt them at any other time is illegal and carries a hefty fine. That is true for most game animals and many of the 'pest' animals. We don't have too many of the medium and large perdators in my area.  Hence we do have to practice good conservation techniques in order to keep these populations to a managable level and so ensure the species survive with good, healthy and viable populations.

Costrel I may have an answer for you with respect to seeing animals hit and killed at low speeds. It could be that those animals suddenly get on the road and there is no way to get a vehicle stopped in time to kill them. Yes, that happens. Even at low speeds if an animal darts onto the road or, in the case of an opposum, at a low speed that is too close to allow a car to stop in time then they get run over. I have had it hapen. I hate it.

I also know there are people in this world who will swerve to hit an animal and not just a wild animal. I have no idea what pleasure these sorts of people derive in killing and maiming other creatures like this. I am certain these people will go to a very special place in hell for it.

I live in the midwest and while we don't have a large population of crows we do have a couple of murders of them around. They can wreak havoc in the garden. We use the plastic predator decoys and that works very well. That isn't an anwer in a large acreage but for a smaller garden it does help. We also use the good old fashioned scarecrow and we put up whirrly gigs and other assorted noise makers. Well noise makers to the crows but rather pleasant to hear for me.  Cheesy

Wisc I am glad to see you. I hope to talk to you and every one else here.

    Take care,

    itty

Suppose instead of a crow, your nephew saw a spider on the ground and stepped on it.  Would your reaction be the same?  Why or why not?

I would have the same reaction. It would be pointless disregard for a living organism that is minding its own business. Furthermore, the spider likely has an important role in an ecological web, serving as food for or controlling the population of another organism. And... spiders and other little organisms are really really interesting to observe and learn from! It is simply, for lack of a better word, stupid to kill it for no other reason than that it is there. But hey... I often rescue bugs that get in the way of other activity. I am, in a nutshell, quite weird.  Smiley

To step out of your way to kill something that is not trying to harm you is does not make sense.

I hate guns, all kinds.  And the killing of animals with guns makes me sick.  I think hunting should be abolished, completely.  Animals were here first and they have a right to have homes.  Those helicopter killers of wolves crazy Sarah Palin makes a sport of really upsets me.

To me it's comparable to Michael Vick and his training dogs to kill each other.  Those that didn't do well at fighting and killing were electrocuted and thrown into a swimming pool, and now he's playing football again for $$$.    Not in my city.  My city would have a fit if he ever played here.  I am surprised that Phila. citizens even support their team after what they've done.  They wouldn't here.

Philly fans would shoot Santa if given a chance. They pummeled him in a barrage of snowballs a few years back. Then again, they are animals, so one could say they are getting even.

I knew an old man who killed crows. He could actually call them and they'd come and he'd shoot them. But this man was born in 1895 and grew up on a subsistence farm. Now we have crappy ultra high-yield corn, the small farmers have been forced out, things are different. So - no reason to kill crows. It's a remnant from past times. Palin and Vick, on the other hand, are miscreants.

What's up with the constant attacks on Palin?  Why do liberals hate her so much?

Uh, newsflash: CENTRISTS can't stand Palin. And since this is a thread about pointless killing of animals AND she's so lacking of the tiniest iota of sportsmanship or character that she couldn't even hunt them from ground level, I'm surprised her name didn't come up here sooner.

A lot of hunters don't hunt from ground level.  And I had no idea there were rules of engagement that tied in specifically with human character.

But I don't see people laughing at her.  I see people salivating at attacking her and her children.  I just think there comes a time when liberals need to just chill out and be tolerate toward those who don't exactly share their viewpoints.

But I don't see people laughing at her. ....

Then you need to get out more. The most absurd part about her ridiculous act is that people are falling for it. Her silly book made the best seller list - by conservative groups buying case lots and giving them away. The factcheck.org article explaining the lies in her book is almost as long as the book itself.

No, it's not that people disagree with her, they really are laughing at her.
