Once upon a time, GS typed the following...

"Well, my tradition holds that one of the ways in which the Gods communicate with people is through omens, birds being one of the more frequent examples. Then again, its from a rather specific cultural tradition, so take from that what you will."

    So, regarding omens:

    Are they personal, cultural, universal?

    Objective or subjective?

    Empirical?

Is there a science of omens?

Thank you for sharing your views.  Smiley

Well for now someone is me...

    Regarding omens,

They are personal so much as an individual is going to perceive them. Although a group of people may see the same thing and draw the same conclusion. They are strictly cultural, what we understand as an omen is known through the study of our mythological and cultural texts.

They are objective in that, for example, you see a specific bird. That bird is not subjective, its real, what is subjective is what you glean from that observation, however that insight needs to be correlated with textual evidence, i.e. there is almost always a precedent from which to draw a conclusion.

They are empirical to some extent; the object or phenomenon is physically observed, and an interpretation is drawn from the circumstances of observation. However the conclusions are by no means empirical as the meaning is not based on experiment, but on tradition and interpretation of symbolism.

Certainly no science, in many ways it is considered (pejoratively) superstition or in a more positive light, meaningful awareness.
