    Did the Catholic Church have anything to do with the preservation of the NT?

    I'm pretty sure that if it weren't for the Catholic Church there wouldn't be a NT.

    Yes, it was the Catholic Church that essentially chose which books were to be in the Bible after much debate and disagreement at times.

    Yes I agree with both of you. The only reason I asked is because some people here seem to not agree with this statement.

    That would be me. And as I've said before, the Oriental Orthodox Churches played the most important role in preserving the New Testament -- not the Latin Roman Catholic Church. The monk Jerome may have been commissioned by the Latin Pope Damasius I of Rome to revise the Old Latin translations of the New Testament (which he had completed by 390 CE), but this took place several decades after the Coptic Pope Athanasius I of Alexandria had issued his 39th Festal Letter in 367 CE detailing which books were officially canonical. I just do not see why people want to assert that the Catholic Church somehow solely preserved the New Testament scriptures. The Catholic Church did preserve the New Testament in a revised Latin translation (the Vulgate), but certainly not in its original Greek. The rest of you can disagree with me all you like, but I will not budge on this.

    (Incidentally, in 2007, the Catholic Church bought the oldest Greek manuscript of the Gospels of John and Luke, Bodmer Papyri XIV-XV, which were found in a collection of Coptic Pachomian monastic documents in Egypt, and which date between 175 and 225 CE.)

    You are making the mistake of assuming that there was more than one Catholic Church at that time.  East, West and South may have had differences but it was one Catholic Church ....and still is.

    Well, if you're going to define all of the different Churches, East and West, as "Catholic," then of course, the Christian Catholic Church preserved its own scriptures. Who else would have? Indian Buddhists?

    I understand now. I'm sorry for being snippy -- my apologies go out to My_King too. (Though from the looks of things, there are still a lot of posters here who do think that the New Testament only exists because of the RCC! But maybe they're defining the RCC as My_King is, so it's a problem of definition.)

    Admittedly, I have a rather Euro centric viewpoint.  I do not see the continuation of Christianity in Europe with out the RCC. 

    The Orthodox Churches would likely have preserved the NT if the RCC collapsed, but I typically don't think of that.  Sorry.
